I'm new here and hoping to get some advice/input from other members on my issue:
My stepdaughter will turn 18 in October. She dropped out of high school when she turned 17 and was trying to get her GED. She has since stopped that and hasn't taken a test since April. In May she told us that she was pregnant. She is currently living with her mom and working about 25 hours a week at Taco Bell.
Our divorce degree reads rather funny (I think). In the event that child has not graduated from high school by the age of 18, we must pay until she gets her high school diploma, certificate, or GED, or until the age of 19 whichever occurs first. It is my understanding/hope that child must be attending school full time. In talking with our lawyer, he feels that she will be emancipated on her 18th birthday because she is working and not attending school.
Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm not sure how "up to date" our lawyer is. I just really don't want see my husband and I have to pay for another full year. We both currently work 2 jobs to pay this support. Is it really fair that daughter gets support from us, will get support from the babies father, WIC, Title 19, and food stamps... etc.... Plus her mom isn't working. She just sits at home all day... ugh...
I appreciate all feedback!
