Mark your calendars. Senator Charles Grassley will be attending the Aug 10th meeting in Cedar Falls. This is a great opportunity to show one of our elected officials the number of people affected negatively by the system. Please seize this opportunity to put faces with the problem. Plain and simple:  numbers talk.

I will be heading from Dubuque and definately plan on attending this meeting.

Is anyone looking to carpool?

Feel free to contact me.  I will be willing to pick up anyone along the way, but contact me as soon as possible so we can figure out the timing to do so (in order to get to the meeting).

We need to do some reserch before his visit. Everytime I talk to or get a letter back from a US rep or senator it is the same thing that this is a state issue and not a national issue. We need to get the figures on the federal dollars that go into this system and then convince him and other federal lawmakers to turn off the tap to CSRU organizations.

Great read Bryan... couldn't agree with you more!  while we are at it...

Why not have a statute that also grants parents 50/50 joint physical AND legal custody, regardless of circumstance, divorce, separation, etc... over a child unless either parent can be proven unfit, or wishes to have no legal obligation to the child.   This is where our world needs to be heading, and would really cut costs back for the state, and help keep families out of the courts, as well as a more morally balanced childhood.

I know there are parts of the world, where both parents adhering such stipulations would be near impossible, but in that event they could sign all guardianship over to an adopted parent.  There are many people out there that want kids, that simply cannot have them.  I believe this would also reduce a lot of the state aid, which in many circumstances, is the sole reason to having a premeditated child with only one custodial parent.

I think it's time that people stand up and commit to the rest of that dirty deed, and not just the single act that would leave them with custody issues.  There are a bunch of dead beat parents out there.. and bunch good ones too.. who is the state to say who is a better parent than the other?  ... but I don't think allowing the dead beats to buy their way out of parenting is the way to go/depend on them to pay their obligation (child support)... they should first be given the opportunity to be an equal parent.

Don't forget that a lot of "deadbeats" are deadbeats because we have a custody system the makes them that way. we have a court that dosn't allow many parrents to be allowed to raise their kids and a CSRU system that drives them underground. My current wife knows that I will not go through the system again if for some reason we separate I'm out of the country for good.

I total agree Chad!  I think we are in a desperate need to replace CSRU with something a little more fundamentally and morally balanced.

Here is a link to my most recent published article entitled, "States' Rights or Federal Rights; Child Custody Examined."  This article is perfect timing with Sen. Grassley attending our support meeting on August 10, 2010, and his willingness to listen to the issues facing divorced or separated parents and how the federal government may be able intervene.

Mark your calendar!!!

On Tuesday, August 10, 2010, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley will be attending our Cedar Falls support meeting at 6:00 p.m. at Praire Lakes Church (see address below).

Tentatively, on September 18, 2010, we are holding our first ever Family Fun Day at the Park at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls, which will include a pork roast and live music from MoJo and the Mudcats. The event is free with more details to follow.

I look forward to seeing everyone!!!

Sorry, but I figure maybe there's laptops or twitter or something one of you's might be checking on before tonight's meeting. Oh how I wish I could be there. I hope to attend the night in September. Anyhows, long story short, IF I were there tonight and IF I had the chance to ask a question/make a comment - it might be this. This happened last week in Allamakee County - there's a lawyer on one side of the street (directly across from the courthouse) who's advice on our particular situation was to walk over to the courthouse and request a form to file ourselves. I would state which one but it doesn't matter for they don't have any. So, okay, we walk across the street to the courthouse and request some forms. Well, they don't have them, (don't have any actually!), don't know "where" they would be available except from a lawyer - so me asks "thee" question. So, you're telling me that as a citizen of the United States of America, I have no right to partake in our so-called justice system, unless I have the money to go back and get the necessary form to file in court from a lawyer. She was rather speechless and points to a sign on the wall with the Iowa Judicial Website (there's nothing on that site, I already know that). Funny aftermath, my son went to the Houston County courthouse in MN, who have "numerous" forms, already printed and available on the wall, but also a computer and a person who will help you find the correct form and print it off if needbe. Go MN !!! Something just very, very wrong here.

Thank You Senator Grassley
August 10, 2010
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings!
IowaFathers wants to thank Senator Grassley, Walt Rogers, and Darin Beck for attending and speaking at our support meeting tonight in Cedar Falls. We also want to thank all of our members who attended this event.
We hope you found the meeting educational and have a clearer understanding of the direction our group is going to be taking over the next year on both the federal and state levels.  As Rob Hampton indicated, he is now Chairman of our IowaFathers Political Action Committee (PAC) and I am now heading up the non-profit side of IowaFathers to educate the community and to provide support and information to parents regarding legal systems.
For those not in attendance, we discussed the role of both federal and state government regarding parenting as a fundamental right, the Bradley Amendment, the Violence Against Women Act, restrictions of public information, current regulations with the UCCJEA, UIFSA, and PKPA, and lastly the current United Nations Bill on parenting.
IowaFathers looks forward to working with Sen. Grassley on these issues.  We intend to build a network with other parental support groups around the United States and obtain the support of their representatives in Congress.
Mark your calendar!!!
On September 18, 2010, we are holding our first ever Family Fun Day at the Park at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls, which will include a hog roast and live music from MoJo and the Mudcats. The event is free and will be held from 1:00 p.m. until around 6:00 p.m.
We have arranged for a professional photographer to be present, who with your written permission, will take pictures of you and your family if you so desire.  These pictures will be provided to all members who agree to participate on a cd within a couple weeks.
Lastly, if you are interested in bringing a food dish or assisting with the event, please contact Nichole Pattison at (319) 939-6655.
Sincerely,
Bryan Iehl
How did the meeting go? I wish I could have been there but it was my week with my child and we were on vacation, again a very inflexible system at work. I hope we got some points across and maby he will be willing to do SOMETHING to make some changes.
It went well. He can not move the rock for us but he is willing to throw his shoulder into it to help. We are moving towards a direction that should put us much farther ahead in a year. We are looking for grants, having an office with several funded programs to help non-custodial parents to be a much bigger part of their children's lives. Fit parents need to be equally involved.
I recall Senator Grassley mention that we should contact other organizations with similar interests and goals.   Not sure of the accuracy of the following website, but it is an extensive list of addresses from around the world that concerns men's/father's rights.
